...you've been eating your vegetables!
Each of our Create-Your-Own Stir Fries includes three cups or more of fresh vegetables, an amount that meets the USDA’s entire daily vegetable requirement! Add to your Stir Fry, an order of steamed brown rice, and you meet another daily requirement for a serving of Whole Grains!
The "scoop" on Whole Grain
Grains are divided into 2 subgroups, whole grains and refined grains. Most Americans consume enough grains, but few are whole grains. According to the USDA, at least ½ of all the grains eaten should be whole grains.
Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel-- the bran, germ, and endosperm. Examples include:
- whole-wheat flour
- bulgur (cracked wheat)
- oatmeal
- whole cornmeal
- brown rice
Refined grains have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ (i.e., steamed white rice). This is done to give grains a finer texture and improve their shelf life, but it also removes dietary fiber, iron, and many B vitamins.
Why is it important to eat vegetables?
Eating vegetables provides health benefits— people who eat more fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet are likely to have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. Vegetables provide nutrients vital for health and maintenance of your body.
